The Yarra Valley is made for exploring. Whether you are chasing mountain views, quiet country roads, or a day of local food and wine, Doon Reserve is the perfect starting point for a memorable drive.

Based in Yarra Junction, you can head out in any direction and discover something new. From the tall trees of Warburton and the views of Mount Donna Buang to the vineyards and wildlife parks of Healesville, each drive offers something different to enjoy.

Warburton and Mount Donna Buang (35 minutes return)

Follow the Warburton Highway east through Millgrove to the charming township of Warburton. Stop for a coffee by the river, browse the local shops, or take a stroll along the Yarra River Walk.

From Warburton, continue up Mount Donna Buang. The summit sits at 1,245 metres and offers sweeping views across the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. In winter, it often receives snow and is popular with families looking for a simple snow experience.

Healesville and the Wineries Loop (60–90 minutes return)

Drive west along the Warburton Highway and turn north at Woori Yallock to begin one of the valley’s most scenic winery loops. You’ll pass through Seville, Coldstream, and Healesville, home to some of the region’s most loved cellar doors and restaurants.

Stop in at Yarra Valley Dairy, Oakridge Wines, or Innocent Bystander, or visit the famous Healesville Sanctuary to see native wildlife up close.

Powelltown and Noojee Forest Drive (90 minutes return)

Head east from Doon Reserve toward Powelltown, a historic timber town surrounded by lush mountain ash forest. Continue along the winding road to Noojee, where you’ll find the spectacular Noojee Trestle Bridge, one of Victoria’s oldest timber rail bridges.

The drive is a favourite for photographers and history lovers, offering a glimpse into the region’s logging heritage.

Upper Yarra Reservoir and Reefton Spur (Half-day drive)

For a longer half-day outing, follow Woods Point Road beyond Warburton to the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park. The drive passes through forested valleys and follows the course of the Yarra River.

More experienced drivers often continue along Reefton Spur, regarded as one of Victoria’s most scenic winding roads. It rewards you with views across the mountains and numerous spots to pull over for a break or a picnic.

Tips for a Great Day on the Road

  • Allow extra time for stops. Each town has attractions, cafes, bakeries, and photo-worthy views.

  • In winter, check Mount Donna Buang road updates as snow can cause temporary closures.

  • Many routes include winding roads, so take your time and enjoy the scenery.

  • Bring water and a picnic or visit one of the many local farm gates.
