Fishing
While Doon Reserve sits right on the Yarra River, most guests find our stretch of water better suited for relaxing than reeling in a catch. The river here is shallow and peaceful which is perfect for unwinding by the bank, but not ideal for serious fishing.
For keen anglers, the Yarra Valley offers a range of excellent fishing locations only a short drive away. Use Doon Reserve as your comfortable base, then head out for day trips to deeper waters and more rewarding bites.

Whether you prefer chasing trout in the upper reaches, exploring shady creeks, or simply soaking up the riverside calm, Doon Reserve makes the perfect base. Ask at reception for printed maps before you head out.

Leave no trace: Keep the Yarra Valley’s waterways clean for everyone to enjoy.

Upper Yarra River — Warburton & Millgrove
Just 20–30 minutes upstream, the Upper Yarra offers some of Victoria’s best freshwater fishing. These sections of river are home to wild brown trout and occasional rainbow trout, especially in the clear runs around Warburton and Millgrove.
The water here runs faster and deeper, with plenty of rock and timber structure — ideal for fly fishing or light spinning.

Woori Yallock Creek
About 25 minutes west of Doon Reserve, Woori Yallock Creek is a quieter option. This tributary flows through farmland and bushland before meeting the Yarra River. It’s known for rainbow trout, river blackfish, and short-finned eel, although success depends heavily on water levels.
Access is easiest near the Maroondah Highway bridge or Woori Yallock township. Bring light tackle and try unweighted worms beneath a float in the deeper pools.

Hoddles Creek
Roughly 30 minutes south‑west of the park, Hoddles Creek winds through farmland and forest before joining the Yarra. Historically known for brown trout, it offers an authentic small‑stream experience with clear water and overhanging vegetation.
This is best suited to light‑gear anglers who enjoy exploring less‑visited spots. Water levels can fluctuate, so check conditions before you go.

Starvation Creek & McMahons Creek
Adventurous guests may enjoy smaller tributaries like Starvation Creek and McMahons Creek, both near Warburton. These creeks flow through forest and offer riffles, pools, and chances for small trout or river blackfish.
These are more off‑the‑beaten‑track options — ideal if you want a quiet setting rather than big catches.

Upper Yarra Reservoir — Restricted
Although the Upper Yarra Reservoir appears on some fishing apps, it’s part of Melbourne’s water‑supply system and closed to public fishing in most areas. Visitors can still enjoy a scenic picnic at Upper Yarra Reservoir Park, but rods should stay packed away.
